Sweet Tea
In order to have the best sweet tea, the tea bags need to be steeped in very hot water. This is what makes using an Instant Pot so good. It provides the perfect environment to make this tea.
Just remember that you do need to let the Pot do its natural pressure release once the cooking time is up. This will help brew the perfect tea.
Drinking iced tea is a good way to keep hydrated. Not only is if full of natural antioxidants, it is also much healthier than soft drink!
Sweetness
With this recipe, you can adjust the sugar to suit your needs by increasing or decreasing the amount of sugar added.
To make this sugar-free, use your favourite sugar substitute with the equivalents recommended by the product.
Tea Bags
Traditionally, sweet tea is made with black tea bags. It can also be made using decaffeinated tea and green tea.
For decaffeinated tea, try using 1 tea bag for 1 cup of water. The same applies for green tea – 1 teabag for 1 cup of water.
Bicarbonate of Soda
Baking soda does not have to be added to your sweet tea. By mixing through a pinch of soda at the end of the brewing process, your tea should be deliciously smooth.
If you want to try adding the baking soda, a pinch is all you will need. A pinch is around â…› teaspoon of baking soda for 4 cups of water.
Flavouring Iced Tea
There are many different ways to flavour iced tea. For 500ml drink of iced tea, try adding:
- Lemon – 1 TBSP of lemon juice and some lemon slices
- Lime – 1 TBSP of lime juice and some lime slices
- Thai Iced Tea – 1 TBSP condensed milk
- Ginger Lemon – ½ tsp of fresh minced or sliced ginger and 1 tsp of lemon juice and fresh lemon slices
- Orange Ginger – ½ tsp of fresh minced or sliced ginger and 1 TBSP of orange juice and fresh orange slices
- Berry – 1 TBSP of pureed strawberries or raspberries
- Herbal – A few twigs of fresh rosemary, thyme, basil, mint or lavender. Try crushing a few leaves and adding for a more intense flavour
- Fruit – Add up to ¼ cup cut up fruit such as peach, mango, kiwi fruit or citrus fruits
- Vanilla – ½ tsp of vanilla extract
- Cold Chai Latte – Add ¼ cup of ice cold milk
- Pomegranate – 1 TBSP of pomegranate juice
- Hibiscus Ginger (Rosella) – ½ tsp of Rosella syrup and ½ tsp of fresh minced or sliced ginger
Storing Iced Tea
The best way to store homemade iced tea is in an airtight glass container. It should be used within a couple of days.

- 8 Cups (2 Quarts) Water
- 4 family-sized Tea Bags
- 3/4 Cup White Sugar
Instructions
Instant Pot Sweet Tea
- Add the water, tea bags and sugar to the Instant Pot insert and add the cover to the Instant Pot. Make sure the vent is set to sealing.
- Select MANUAL or PRESSURE COOK, select high pressure and set the timer for 15 minutes.
- Allow the pressure to release naturally when the cooking time has completed.
- Open the lid and remove and discard the tea bags using a pair of tongs.
- Transfer the tea to a jug and place in the refrigerator.
- Allow the tea to cool completely prior to serving.
- To Serve: Serve over ice with lemon slices.
Sweet Tea without an Instant Pot
- Place the sugar and the tea bags into a heatproof jug.
- Boil the water and pour it over the sugar and tea bags.
- Let the mixture step fo 10 minutes.
- Remove and discard the tea bags using a pair of tongs.
- Transfer the tea to a jug and place in the refrigerator.
- Allow the tea to cool completely prior to serving.
Notes
- The tea bags will need to be removed immediately after the cooking time has been completed as if they are left in too long, the tea may become bitter.
- Try adding a pinch of bicarbonate of soda to help reduce any bitter flavour, if needed. Add it just after removing the tea bags from the hot tea.
- You can use a calorie-free sweetener instead of sugar, though you will need to adjust the amount to your desired sweetness as some sweeteners measure the same as sugar while others require less.
