How to Make Homemade Buttermilk

This post may contain affiliate links. Please read my full disclosure policy.

I don’t buy buttermilk as I don’t seem to use it very often and I find that it is easier to make my own when I need it. I have found seven simple ways in which to make homemade buttermilk.

How to Make Homemade Buttermilk

Here are seven different ways to make buttermilk, depending on what ingredients to have handy at home. It is very quick and easy to whip up a batch of homemade buttermilk when you need it.

Homemade Buttermilk 1

  • 1 TBSP white vinegar or apple cider vinegar
  • 1 cup milk

Place the TBSP of white vinegar or apple cider vinegar in a jug.

Add the milk.

Stir and let stand at room temperature for five minutes, until it thickens before using as required.

Homemade Buttermilk 2

  • 1 TBSP lemon juice
  • 1 cup milk

Place the TBSP of lemon juice in a jug.

Add the milk.

Stir and let stand at room temperature for five minutes, until it thickens before using as required.

Homemade Buttermilk 3

  • 1 ¾ teaspoon of cream of tartar
  • 1 cup milk

Place the TBSP of lemon juice in a jug.

Add the milk.

Stir and let stand at room temperature for five minutes, until it thickens before using as required.

Homemade Buttermilk 4

  • ¾ cup plain yoghurt
  • 1/4 cup  whole milk

Combine in a small mixing bowl. Use as required.

Homemade Buttermilk 5

  • ½ cup plain Greek yoghurt
  • 1/2 cup whole milk

Combine in a small mixing bowl. Use as required.

Homemade Buttermilk 6

  • ½ cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup whole milk

Combine in a small mixing bowl. Use as required.

Homemade Buttermilk 7

  • Heavy or thickened cream

Fill a jar with a lid half way up with the cream.

Add the lid, making sure it is secured tightly.

Shake the bottle back and forth. First, the cream will turn into thickened cream. Keep shaking until you have a glob of butter and a separate liquid. This liquid is buttermilk.

Pour the buttermilk out of the jar and use as required.

To complete making the butter, knead the glob under cold water for a couple of minutes to make sure to remove any of the remaining buttermilk. Add a little salt and store in the fridge until you are ready to use.
