HomeschoolPiano Review

This post may contain affiliate links. Please read my full disclosure policy.

I had piano lessons for about 8 years until health problems got in the way and have always wanted our boys to learn the piano too, but again due to the same health problems, I have struggled to teach them. For our latest review, we were given a lifetime subscription for up to five students to: HomeschoolPiano – Complete Set of Books from HomeschoolPiano.

Homeschool Piano is an online piano lesson program that uses a 6-step cycle: Technique, Rhythm, Ear Training, Reading Music, Song and Improvisation. This cycle is easy for students to understand and lays a great foundation for the future. It also touches on all of the nine National Standards for Music Education, making it a well-rounded musical curriculum.

When you sign up to the complete set of books, you receive access to:

CorePiano – This is for absolute beginners. This section contains over 30 lessons where you will learn things like how to sit at the piano, how to play the notes (the grabbing technique) and basic music theory. This is a great place to start if you have no musical background at all.

Book 1 – This is for beginners. In this book, you will learn how to read music and create your own music.

Book 2 – This is for the beginner to intermediate students. This book continues on from Book 1. You will continue to learn more about rhythm, technique and music reading.

Book 3 – This is fore intermediate level students. In this book you will learn how to create piano arrangements and become a well-rounded piano player.

Each book contains 6 units, with each of these units containing 7, 10 minute lessons.

In the way of setup, there is very little that you need.

* a 61 key keyboard or piano

* a tablet, phone or computer to view the lessons. You are also able to download them, so you can watch them later.

* a printer and paper to print off the books.

How did we go?

Our boys have really enjoyed learning to play the piano at their own pace with these lessons. Each lesson goes for around 10 minutes, but they are engaging and easy to understand. Each lesson covers a new topic, so the boys feel like each time they complete a lesson, they have learnt something new which is exciting for them.

Even though each of our boys have their own separate log in details, they both started with the CorePiano.  I downloaded and printed the book once, which they shared when they watched the lessons. In this book, there were no quizzes and there was a different topic with each new video lesson.  Once they moved onto Book 1, there are quizzes that need to be completed after finishing lessons. This is also where Willie’s 6 steps cycle starts.

We found it helpful for our boys to complete a lesson and then spend a few minutes going over what they had just learnt on their own. They completed a couple of lessons per week and found it was great to spend a few minutes on days when they didn’t complete lessons, to review what they had previously learnt.

The boys also just love the virtual keyboard. They love seeing the notes that Willie is playing light up and then playing these notes themselves.

I really loved the option of going back and reviewing lessons if they boys felt they needed or wanted to and how you were able to download the lessons (for books 1-3) and save them to your computer so that you could still complete the lessons without internet access.

With your parent login, you can see which lessons your child has completed and the scores they received on the quizzes.

As a parent, I have found this to be an amazing program.  You do not need to have a musical background, there is very limited preparation (With books 1-3 there is a printable book resource) and you don’t have to travel to music lessons! I also this the price of this program is awesome. You could spend thousands of dollars on private lessons over 2-3 years and for just $299, you can purchase this program which covers everything you would learn in those 2-3 years and have the flexibility of completing it in your own home.

Being able to view the lessons on any phone, tablet or computer, also makes this homeschool piano program accessible for everyone!   To try a free lesson: Homeschool Piano
