Digital Heroes and Heroines of the Past American History is a 30 week history curriculum that is designed for students in 1st grade through to the 6th grade. Many of the lessons are broken up into two age levels. They are marked in the top left hand corner whether they are suited for grades 1 – 2 or 3 -6.
At the end of each lesson are questions, writing topics and a geography question. Some lessons have art activities and some have cooking activities. Many also have a timeline activity and a memory verse as well.
Though the chapters are short, they are very informative and educational. They read more like a book than a text book, making it more enjoyable for students.
At the end of each period of history, there is a list of additional recommended resources for those who are interested in exploring more.
How did we go?
We started at the start: The Period of Discovery. We read through the first lesson than answered the questions. The boys really enjoyed the writing topics and then we made a teepee and a cardboard canoe. We had to make the teepee inside as it was raining, but the boys really enjoyed it.
Then we went onto lesson 2 and finished The Story of Leif Erikson off by making a viking ship from play dough. These activities really made each lesson come alive and keep the boys interested and wanting to read on and learn about what happened next. We continued on completing one lesson a day.
A Hot Cocoa Drink (Hot Chocolate) ~ From Section 2 Lesson 3
The lessons usually took us around half an hour to complete. This did depend on the activities. The ones with the recipes and certain craft activities sometimes took us a bit longer.
We found this curriculum to be an awesome package that includes history, geography and Biblical lessons. The real life stories are very inspirational and encouraged our boys to want to learn more about these heroes and heroines of the past.
Listening to the Sing Some History cd, acting out the skits, cooking the recipes, and making the crafts really helped the boys be able to understand what life was like so many years ago and helped to bring what they had just read to life.
We have really enjoyed our time with this user-friendly history curriculum. Our boys have learnt a lot and have really enjoyed the opportunity to read, act, cook and make the crafts in these books.
We reviewed the Digital Version of the Heroes and Heroines of the Past: American History, but a printed version is also available for those who would prefer it. The printed version is in black and white while the digital version is in colour.
