I bought a couple of mini pumpkins from Coles as I thought they were cute. They were really much bigger than a grapefruit. I put them in the fruit bowl and forgot about them until quite a few weeks later. They were getting soft and one was ready to be thrown out, so I thought about what we could do with the one that was okay.
We decided to see if we could grow a pumpkin in a pumpkin.
I cut a small square out of the top of the pumpkin and added some soil and a little water.
A week later, we had a little sprout!
After about two weeks, we still only had the one little sprout.
By this stage the pumpkin was starting to rot and get a little smelly, so we decided to plant the pumpkin in the garden.
Maybe, by using a proper sized pumpkin, you would get more sprouts. We will have to try that some day soon!
To add to this, we learned about the life cycle of a pumpkin. Below you will find some great pumpkin life cycle cards and notebooking pages printables.

What a neat idea! And I love the idea of just planting it outside, so the pumpkin container can just finish rotting away. Good fertilizer!
