Children these days are not as active as children were in the past. This is mainly due to all the technological advances that have happened over the years.
They would much rather sit in front of the television or the computer, or play the iPad or DSI, then run around or ride a bike outside. Granted, there are days when you can’t go outside due to the weather, but children do need exercise and having fun while exercising makes it so much more enjoyable. And it is recommended that children get at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day.
A great way to incorporate exercise and fitness into our routine, was to add free brain breaks with GoNoodle.
GoNoodle offers a variety of activities such as dancing, running, and stretching. These physical activities are completed in small stints, “brain breaks,” to help improve your students performance in the classroom, or in our case, in homeschooling.
GoNoodle has helped our boys to stay more focused on their work and more motivated to finish their work.
At the start, when our boys start showing signs of needing a little break, we brought out the laptop and they choose a brain break or two and start moving. Now, we have a brain break every hour or so while they are completing their schoolwork.
Their favourites include Happy (as they love the Despicable Me movies), The Continental Drift (Ice Age is another of their favourite movies), Walk up the Stairs Bob and Rainbow Kids. They also enjoy To the Maximo videos for stretching.
GoNoodle is an awesome free resource for teachers and homeschooling parents around the world. These fabulous physical activity breaks get the blood flowing, help improve concentration and engagement in the school room as well as encourage the students to be more motivated.

Oh that’s cool! I would love an adult version 🙂 I usually need a mental break every hour, whether I’m blogging or doing housework!

I’ve heard about this from a few teachers, but this is my 1st time actually seeing it. It’s a brilliant idea. It’s almost like the Wii game with the interactive movements. Good stuff. Thanks for sharing.
