What are Sight Words?
Sight words are words that we see the most frequently while reading and writing. They don’t often have an image that can be used to picture them. Due to their high appearance, children need to be able to recognise, and understand them as soon as they read them. This will enable them to read fluently and independently.
Not all of the sight words follow the standard phonetic spelling patterns either. These words including as talk, come, once and the, are known as non-phonetic or tricky words. They are difficult for children to sound out, making it easier to teach children to identify them through recognition and repetition.
Fishing For Sight Words
Our boys love fishing and have gone through a lot of the little plastic fishing rods that you can purchase from Kmart.
After finding some dowel rods, we decided to make our own fishing rods and fish.
We glued some wool around one end of the dowel rods for the handle and then we glued a different coloured wool around the other end, but kept a length on the end to which we glued a magnet.
We attached a paper clip to each of the sight words so the boys could catch them.
Ways to Use these Cards
- Print out two copies. Use one copy of each word as โfishโ and put the others in a pile that is placed face down. Pick up the top card and see if you can catch the same sight word.
- These cards can also be used in a memory game. Print two copies and place face down. Pick up two cards and see if they match. Continue till you have all matching pairs.
- Play fish. Using two copies of these cards, place the all face down in a pile. Each player gets eight cards each. If you have two the same, place them in a pile. The youngest player asks the person on their right if they have a card (that they have in their hand) and if they do, they hand it over, if they donโt they say fish and the asking player picks up a card from the pile. Continue till all cards are paired. The player with the most pairs wins.
- Print, cut out and laminate the cards. Place a paper clip on each card and use fishing rod with a magnet at the end to fish for the cards.
- Use to practice spelling: Child fishes for a card and then spells the word they catch.
