We made these cute paper lanterns to remind us of how the Chinese decorate their homes and streets with paper lanterns for festivals.
To make paper lanterns, you will need:
- coloured paper
- scissors
- glue/stapler/tape
Take one piece of coloured paper and cut a 1 inch (2.5cm) strip off the short end of it. This will be used for the handle.
Fold the paper you have left (after cutting the end off) in half lengthways.
Then cut strips into the folded side of the paper, stoping about 2 inches (5cm) from the edge.
Unfold this piece of paper and roll it into a tube.
Overlap the edges and secure with a stapler / tape /glue.
Notes:
You can decorate the paper before cutting if you wish to add a design to your lantern.
You can also make a smaller version by cutting 2 inches (5cm) off a piece of paper before cutting the strip for the handle off. This smaller lantern can then slide into the bigger lantern and be stapled to the larger lantern to keep it in place.
