These colour sorting mats are the perfect way for toddlers, kindergarteners and preschoolers to practice recognizing colors and sorting at the same time! This set of color sorting mats features eleven colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, black, brown, white, gray/grey, and pink. Each card features a crayon in the colour and the colour word. There are 66 color cards featuring six items for each of the eleven color mats.
To Prepare:
To prepare, print out all the pages on white paper or cardstock. For durability, I then recommend laminating them. There are 12 colour mats (two for grey/gray, depending on where you live as to which spelling you use). There is also a blank colour mat which can be used with the colour word cards.
You could write the name of the colour on the back of each card before laminating to make this activity a self-check one. For very young children, you could also place velcro dots on the spots on the colour mats and on the back of the colour cards.
To Use:
This activity is pretty straightforward. Have your child match the correct colour objects onto the correct cards. For young children, start familiarising them with the colours, one at a time. Read the name of the colour while pointing to it on the colour mat and then show them the coloured crayon.
As your child becomes better with their colours, add another mat, using two then three at a time until they can use all the mats at once, sorting the coloured pictures correctly onto the coloured mats.
This pack also includes a black and white version for those kids who love to colour in.
