As the Chinese New Year approaches, we spent some time learning about the Chinese culture and how they celebrate Chinese New Year.
China Unit
A while ago, we were part of an international swap and were given some items from China. This was the perfect time to revisit those items and learn more about how they are used.
The first thing we did was look at the money the Chinese use. I printed off some paper money that I found on the internet and we talked about the differences between them. We were given some Chinese red packets in our package and we read and talked about how they are used in the Chinese Lunar New Year celebrations. – Money is placed in these packets for good luck and then given out to the children.
We were also given a paper ball in which you blow into the silver ring, which blows the ball up and then play with it. The boys were fascinated with this and loved playing catch with it.
Many festivals are celebrated in China such as the Mid Autumn Festival (also known as the Chinese Lantern Festival). We were given many paper lanterns, which are used as decorations during these festivals. We also made our own paper lanterns.
We learnt about the Great Wall of China. You can find the {Free} printable that we did here: The Great Wall of China.
Paper cutting is also art of China. I found some paper cutting that I found when I was cleaning it out a cupboard, so we spent some time learning and talking about them.
The kids painted and decorated some Chinese shapes which we purchased from Cleverpatch.
We also made some Chinese Bamboo Scrolls
and some Cherry Blossom Fans.
