Apple Crumble Recipe

This is a quick and easy apple crumble recipe that only takes a few minutes to make, so I make it while cooking dinner, so that we are able to eat it warm for dessert.

To make it even quicker, you can use tin pie apples. Just place them in a greased baking tray, make the crumble and place on top before popping it in the oven to bake.

Apple Crumble Leftovers

This recipe can be doubled or even tripled if needed, with the leftover, very easy to reheat.

By making a large batch, you can enjoy it throughout the week. It makes a great dish for morning and afternoon tea, as well as for dessert. We have been known to enjoy a small amount for brunch on a weekend as well.

To reheat, just place it in a microwavable dish and heat until it has reached the desired temperature. Or, you can cover with foil and reheat in the oven on 180˚C (350˚F) until warmed through.

If you prefer, apple crumble can also be enjoyed cold.

Apples and other Fruit

Any apples could be used in this recipe – Granny Smith, red delicious, fuji and honeycrisp. I tend to make it when the apples that we have are getting a little tired, and need to be used up soon. Just peel, slice and remove any really bruised bits if they have them. Peel the apples or not, this one is up to you.

Other fruit can also be used with apples or on their own. Some other variations include:

  • Berries with the apples
  • Rhubarb
  • Peaches
  • Pears

Variations

Though there are many different variations, you may need to adjust the quantities as it may make the crumble too dry or too wet.

  • Instead of plain flour, try using rye, spelt, or almond flour – add more butter if too dry
  • Replace the brown sugar with raw or white sugar
  • Replace some or all of the flour with rolled oats
  • Add a tsp of cinnamon to the flour

Storing Apple Crumble

Store in the fridge for up to 5 days or store in the freezer for up to 3 months.

When storing in the freezer, allow to cool completely before wrapping in cling wrap and then aluminium foil.

Thaw and reheat before serving.
